SOLO

​EDUCATION

Matilda won the inaugural Eric Aubier International Trumpet Competition in October 2017 in Rouen France, beating 53 other contestants to claim the First Prize in the Master Category. Matilda will return to Rouen in the next season to make her international solo debut with the Opera Orchestra of Rouen. Matilda made her solo debut at the BBC Proms in July 2016. She performed the third movement of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic under the baton of Alpesh Chauhan at the two BBC Ten Pieces II Proms. In conjunction with these events, Matilda performed live on BBC Radio 3's ​​In Tune Proms Special on the opening night of the Proms, and on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. Matilda has also performed as a soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra and the London Mozart Players. She will make another radio appearance with the BBC Concert Orchestra in September 2017 to celebrate BBC Radio 2's 50th Anniversary.


Matilda is a Making Music UK's Philip and Dorothy Green Young Artist 2017-19, performing both concertos and solo recitals across the UK. She is also the current recipient of the Sidney Perry Brass Award, granted by the Philharmonia's Martin Musical Scholarship Fund, and joined the Philharmonia Orchestra on tour in Klosters in December 2016. Matilda is also a Park Lane Group Young Artist, opening the 2017 Spring Series with a recital of contemporary music for trumpet and piano at St. John's Smith Square, London. She will make her Wigmore Hall recital debut with the Park Lane Group in July 2018. Matilda is also a Concordia Foundation Artist, performing many recitals across London in venues such as St. James' Piccadilly. Matilda was recently awarded The Royal Warrant Holders Association Alan Britten Bursary to participate in a week of lessons and masterclasses with legendary trumpet soloist Hakan Hardenberger in Snape Maltings.


Matilda has won many competitions. In 2014, she won both the BBC Young Musician of the Year Brass Final and the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award. Her success led to concertos with the BBC Concert Orchestra for BBC Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night and with the Cory Brass Band at the European Brass Band Championships Gala Concert in Perth, Scotland in 2014. She also performed live on BBC Radio 2's Chris Evans' Breakfast Show. Matilda was also the first ever trumpeter to win the Junior Guildhall's annual Lutine Prize in 2013, and has won many regional Young Musician of the Year competitions in Croydon, Woking, Guildford and Marlowe (Canterbury). 
Matilda, 21, graduated from Trinity College, University of Cambridge with a First in June 2017. She was admitted as a Senior Scholar of the College in 2016. She is now studying for her Masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music, London with Head of Brass, Mark David, where she holds the Winifred Agnes Disney Award. 

CHAMBER MUSIC

Matilda led the EUYO Brass Quintet at the Austrian Embassy, London & at the opening of the EU Residency building in Amsterdam in May 2016. She also led the EUYO Brass Dectet in Austria & Italy. Matilda was also First Trumpet of the Cambridge University Trumpet Ensemble from 2014-17. Matilda is currently a member of the Ramiel Brass Quintet  at the Royal Academy of Music/

OUTREACH/EDUCATION

Matilda is very interested in outreach programmes and educational work. She performed with the BOLD AS Quintet at many school workshops in Kent with the Deal Festival in 2017 and has led many Inspire Days for the National Youth Orchestra. This includes a 3-day event at the Highbury Grove School, Islington. 

​CHARITABLE WORK

ORCHESTRAL

Matilda was the Principal Trumpet of the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2016 & 2017. She performed Brucker's 7th Symphony under Bernard Haitink and both Mahler's and Sibelius' 1st Symphonies under Vasily Petrenko on the Summer tours, performing at prestigious venues such as the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam and Berlin's Konzerthaus. Matilda also toured with the orchestra in November 2016 to the Gothenburg Festival in Sweden. 


Matilda played in the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in September 2016 for a Classic FM Live concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London. She was the Principal Trumpet of the Cambridge University Chamber and Symphony Orchestras between 2014-2016. Prior to this, Matilda held the position of Principal Trumpet of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain from 2012-14. She was awarded the John Fletcher Brass Award in her final year, and received many complimentary reviews from the national press for her performance of the First Trumpet part of Mahler's 5th Symphony in the Barbican in January 2014. Matilda's performances with the National Youth Orchestra were braodcast live on BBC Radio 3 and on BBC 4 (television). 
Matilda is a supporter of the charity Brass for Africa, organising a fund-raising concert in 2015. She has also raised funds for the Parish of Chiddingstone and for St.Lawrence C of E Primary School, Sevenoaks.

OTHER MUSICAL ACTIVITIES

Matilda is an all-round musician. She was awarded Distinction in her piano ATCL diploma in 2015 and has ABRSM Grade 8 Distinctions in both 'Cello and Voice. She is currently doing research for a new book about the entire history of music from the earliest sounds to the present day.
